Image Software Comparisons

Software Package Comparisons

For this task I will compare Photoshop and Paint, displaying the similarities and differences between some tools in the two programs.

Adobe Photoshop

Photoshop is a high end image manipulation software, among the most commonly used in the professional industry. It is known for having a myriad of features ranging from basic tools to complex manipulation; this wide range of features means that most novice users will only be able to perform a fraction of the tasks that a professional user could.

Paint

Ms Paint is a simple image editing software that is included by default in windows packages. It is well known for its simplicity and ease of use, being the preferred program for basic editing by many users. As it is a basic program there are several limitations, including the lack of complex editing tools that are available in Photoshop.

Flip Tool

Flipping an image in both Photoshop and Paint is very easy. In Photoshop, click the image tab on the top toolbar and select Rotate Canvas. From here you can select a horizontal or vertical flip, in addition to several rotation options.
In paint, simply select the Rotate button on the toolbar and select the preferred flip option.

Both software packages are easily capable of flipping images horizontally and vertically, here's the result.

Crop Tool

The crop tool allows the user to select an area of the image to preserve while anything outside the selection is deleted.
To crop an image in Photoshop, press C to select the crop tool, then drag the selection box over the desired part of the image. Once selected, the selection area can be resized and rotated. Once done, right click the selected area and select crop.
In paint, cropping is incredibly simple; select an area and click the crop button.

Resize

Resize tools allow the user to change the height and width of the image.
In Photoshop, the resize menu can be found under the Image menu, or by pressing Alt+Ctrl+I.
In Paint, the resize menu can be found on the toolbar, between the crop and rotate tools.
In both menus, the user can alter the height and width by a percentage of the original or in other measurements such as pixels and centimeters.

Free Hand Draw

Both programs have free hand drawing that allow the user to draw using the mouse.
In Photoshop, press B or select the brush tool. Before drawing you can tweak the settings of the brush, such as size, hardness and style of brush.
In Paint, select the brushes button, then choose a specific type of brush.
Once the brush type, size etc have been selected, simply click and drag the cursor in the desired direction to begin drawing the image.
